Is a CSA Right for Me?
Joining a farm share is a big commitment. Before making the purchase, it is important to think hard about whether it is the right fit for you and your family. Read these 6 questions below to find out is our CSA is right for you.
1. Do you value high-quality produce?
Harvested fresh before delivery, you can taste (and see!) the difference in the quality of our produce. After the first crunch into our carrots or a BLT bite made with our spicy mustard greens, you’ll never return to wilted store produce!
2. Do you want to know (and support) your local farmers?
You are directly investing in our farm, helping to cover the inputs required to sustainably grow vegetables and providing a living wage for our farmers. You will know exactly where your food comes from and the nutty farmers who grow it. You share the risks (unpredictable weather) and tasty rewards (extra juicy tomato seasons) of our business, strengthening the relationship you have with your food!
3. Are organic & Sustainable important to you?
We are investing in the long-term health of our soil and designing for environmental sustainability. Instead of relying on chemicals to fertilize and protect our crops, we are relying our natural resources (cover crops, beneficial insects, etc.) which in turn regenerate the land for years to come. We use permaculture design to preserve water and conserve energy e.g., using the heat produced by our compost to warm our greenhouse!
4. Do you like experiencing new foods?
Everything we grow is in season, that’s the only way we know how to do it! As a result, you will be exposed to new varieties of vegetables you have never experienced. Have no fear, we will help guide you through this process, teaching you how to cook with new vegetables and how to get more out of the vegetables you’re already cooking with (e.g., using beet greens on salads!). We email a weekly list of what you might expect in your share, as well as recipes to inspire your cooking.
5. Do you have time to cook?
Picking up a large basket of fresh vegetables every week is exciting for those who cook often but can be overwhelming if you don’t have time to cook or prefer to eat out. It is important to be honest with yourself about your eating habits and whether a CSA is right for you!
6. Do you want to join a food community?
With your membership, you will also receive discounts for on-farm events including farm-to-table dinners or educational workshops. At these gatherings you have the opportunity to meet other farm loving folks who live nearby!
Is you answered YES! to all of these questions, it sounds like you’re a good candidate for our CSA program!
If you answered NO to any questions, that is totally fine, the CSA is not right for everyone. You can always purchase vegetables from us any weekend at the Matthews Farmers Market!
